This past summer saw NSW experience the worst bushfire season on record. Through our investigations into Rosedale’s experience of the New Year’s Eve fire that devastated the south coast, it is clear how the wind patterns defined the narrative, as the fuelling directional force behind the fire.

Fire and wind have an intrinsic relationship. As well as wind conditions determining fire outcomes, they are both a kind of ephemeral kinetic energy, both key ecological processes that shape the Australian landscape.

This project rethinks wind’s relationship to fire, understand it and harness it to strive for a more resilient landscape, rather than it being an enemy, exacerbating fire.
